FABSCRAP is a movement of changemakers and your one-stop textile reuse and recycling resource. Throughout the weekend, FABSCRAP will host sorting tables, where you can get involved in keeping waste out of landfill!
Why sort with FABSCRAP? Before textiles can be recycled, every piece has to pass through human hands. Textile waste is often mixed with all kinds of extras (think metal zippers, paper tags, plastic sequin, and sticker labels), but only certain fabrics can be recycled. That’s where FABSCRAP volunteers come in: carefully sorting and deconstructing each item, removing stickers, staples, paper headers, and trims like zippers, buttons, and sequins, to prep the fabric to be recycled.
Only Me & I is run by Melayah, a NYC-based fashion designer and content creator known for making bold, one-of-a-kind pieces that are true wearable art. She will be selling her pieces and doing demos, showing how she creates her unique items.
New York Textile Lab is a design and consulting company offering products and services that support Carbon Farming practices. We create yarns and textiles that link designers with local fiber producers and mills. Our textiles are made with fibers grown on healthy, climate-beneficial soils in our region and crafted by transparent, ethical, and local mills. NYTL helps to build a diverse, regenerative textile supply ecosystem, empowering designers to make socially and environmentally responsible choices. We believe textile production should thrive through regenerative, collaborative systems, not extraction or scarcity. Connect with NY Textile Lab and be part of a regenerative textile economy.
Custom Collaborative trains, mentors, and advocates for and with no/low-income and immigrant women to build the skills necessary to achieve economic success in the sustainable fashion industry and broader society. Learn more about Custom Collaborative, plus see their pop-up showcasing their trainees' designs, this Wear Your Values Weekend.
The Rehumanize Upcycle Bar makes sustainable fashion accessible and fun by transforming upcycling into a customizable, social experience, empowering individuals and communities to reconnect with what we wear.
Bring your clothes or use one of our pre-loved pieces to give new life to old clothes!
Sustainable Fashion Presentation
Over the last several years, the term sustainability has lost its meaning, shifting away from an actual concept into an opaque, catchall buzzword the industry often deploys when it wants to convince customers that their brand is doing right for people and the planet. To be sustainable means sustaining this planet for future generations, something that is at odds with the “growth by any means” ethos of much of the fashion industry today.
This presentation explores radical approaches to sustainability through the lens of fashion education, both in the classroom and beyond, posing the question - what is worth sustaining in fashion practices? The exhibition will display clothing, mixed media, and handcraft that answers this question, considering what we must learn from community and traditional & ancestral knowledge, which, in conjunction with innovations in sustainable practices, will push the industry forward towards a better future.
